Secure verification: what it is and when to use it
An optional helper for the rare videos that YouTube protects more strongly. It is off by default, and here is exactly what happens when you switch it on.
What it is for
YouTube changes how it checks requests from time to time, and some videos are served only to requests that carry a proof. Secure verification lets the extension get that proof, plus up-to-date signed client settings, from api.youtubeturbodownloader.com, so downloads keep working without waiting for a new version.
What it sends
It sends no video names and no links. It sends only an anonymous visitor identifier to get a proof token. The settings it receives are digitally signed, and the extension only accepts them if the signature is valid. Read the privacy policy for the full details.
When to switch it on
- A download stops with a protected video message.
- Downloads that worked before suddenly fail and updating the extension did not help.
If everything works, leave it off. It can be switched off again at any time.
How to check that it works
Open the settings. Next to the switch a small light shows the connection state, and Connection details shows the technical details. Then try the video again. On Firefox 140 and later the browser also asks for your permission for optional data sharing the first time.
If it still fails
Work through the fixes in order, then send a bug report with the video link, quality, message and the connection details.
